MAIN COURSE

AI-powered Super Mario 🎮 🍄

On Wednesday, Virtual Protocols unveiled MarioVGG. It's a text-to-video AI model trained specifically on Super Mario Bros gameplay footage.

What is MarioVGG?

It's an AI system that generates a playable version of Super Mario Bros. using video generation, not traditional game code.

How does it work?

MarioVGG generates game video based on simple text commands like “run” or “jump”.

What can it do?

The AI simulates game physics, mimics Mario's movements, and even creates new procedurally generated levels.

How long did it take to train?

Surprisingly quick. It was trained on a single Nvidia RTX 4090 GPU using 737,000 gameplay frames.

Any limitations?

Yupp. It's slow (4 seconds to generate 6 frames), low-res (128 x 96 max), and doesn't always follow game rules. It even keeps going after Mario dies!

Why is this important?

Virtual Protocols calls it the start of “the era of infinite interactive worlds,” suggesting a future of AI-generated games.

Didn't someone else do something similar recently?

Oh yeah, baby. Last week, we covered an AI-generated DOOM video game.

SIDE SALAD

AI designs super-proteins 🤖 🧬

On Tuesday, Google DeepMind unveiled AlphaProteo. It's an AI system that designs custom proteins to stick to specific molecular targets.

What is AlphaProteo?

It's an AI that creates proteins that bind to specific targets, like a key fitting a lock.

How good is it?

It's 3 to 300 times better at making strong-binding proteins than current methods. For one target, 88% of its designs worked in lab tests!

What can it do?

AlphaProteo successfully designed binders for 7 out of 8 tricky targets, including cancer-related proteins and viral proteins.

Any real-world wins?

You bet. Independent tests showed some designs could stop Covid-19 from infecting cells.

How was it trained?

On tons of protein data, including over 100 million structures predicted by AlphaFold (DeepMind's protein-folding AI).

Why is this a big deal?

It could supercharge drug discovery, potentially saving billions in R&D and bringing new treatments to patients way faster.

Any downsides?

It couldn't design binders for one super-tough target (TNFα). Also, there are biosecurity concerns that DeepMind is working to address.

What's next?

DeepMind's exploring drug design applications and working to make AlphaProteo even better at tackling tough protein design challenges.

This sounds familiar…

Back in May, we reported on AlphaFold 3. It advanced the field of protein folding and drug discovery.

This is Bill:

Bill is the business owner of a small business that generates ten million dollars in revenue. Bill had his cousin Chad do all the IT work in his office.

Sure, it's messy, but it gets the job done.

Until today…

Today, Bill is explaining to his staff that Chad forgot to back up their networks. There was also a hack last night where their client credit card information was leaked.

All of this could have been prevented if Bill chose Reppert Factor to outsource his IT department.

So tell us… who's your Chad?

Startup News 💰

OpenAI’s next model may cost $2000 a month. Allegedly, its costs for developing generative AI soar, despite having over a million paying business users.

Microsoft announced its “next phase of Copilot.” event. It will be live on LinkedIn on September 16th, with CEO Satya Nadella leading the event.
