On Tuesday, Tesla released new footage of its Optimus robot. It boasts advancements in autonomous function and human interaction.
What new things can it do?
It can navigate factory floors, avoid obstacles, and climb stairs independently. It interacts with humans, hands out snacks, bumps fists, and responds to various gestures autonomously.
Anything else?
Yes, it self-docks at charging stations with its rear camera and can lift and carry up to 24 lb. It also boasts improved dexterity in its robotic hand with 22 degrees of freedom.
How does it process its environment?
It uses onboard neural networks similar to Tesla’s self-driving car tech that capture, process, and map out visual data.
What other robots does it compete with?
A bunch. In March, we covered Apptronik’s Apollo. Apptronik partnered with Mercedes-Benz to integrate Apollo robots into the automobile manufacturing process.
In April, we reported on Boston Dynamic’s new Atlas robot. It’s an all-electric, humanoid robot that replaced the hydraulic version of Atlas.
In August, we covered the Figure 02 humanoid robot. It has a 50% larger battery capacity and 3x the computing power of its predecessor.
In September, we reported the Norwegian NEO Beta. It’s a humanoid robot designed to assist in home environments.

Speaking of Atlas… 👀
On Wednesday, Boston Dynamics and Toyota Research Institute (TRI) announced a collaboration. The goal is to integrate advanced AI into the Atlas humanoid robot.
What's the goal of this partnership?
To combine TRI's Large Behavior Models (LBMs) with Boston Dynamics' Atlas robot, and accelerate general-purpose robot development.
What are Large Behavior Models?
They’re similar to large language models, but they’re specifically for physical tasks. They allow robots to learn by observing human behavior.
What are the initial applications?
Narrowly focused industrial tasks, with future potential for elder care and household assistance.
When can I get one?
No specific timeline or budget has been announced yet.
