AI-powered worms? 🧠 🪱

What do you call it when worms take over the world…?

Global Worming 🪱 🔥

Worms? What?

Researchers used AI to control light-sensitive neurons in tiny worms, steering them towards tasty bacteria.

What does this look like?

  • They used optogenetics to genetically modified worms. This makes certain neurons activate or deactivate in response to light.

  • They used a camera to track worm movement in a dish.

  • AI analyzed 15 frames of movement data every 0.3 seconds.

  • AI controlled a light aimed at the dish, triggering the light-sensitive neurons.

  • AI learned to guide worms to “treats” made of E. coli through trial and error.

Any surprises?

The worms and AI worked together — AI steered, but the worms navigated small obstacles on their own.

What's next?

The team is exploring using this method to improve deep-brain stimulation treatments. This tech could lead to better treatments for conditions like Parkinson's disease, or even enhance human abilities.

SIDE SALAD

A civilization of AI agents 🤖 🌎

On Tuesday, Altera unveiled Project Sid. It's a simulation of over 1,000 autonomous AI agents collaborating in a Minecraft virtual world.

What is Project Sid?

It's a simulation where autonomous AI agents develop their own economy, culture, religion, and government within Minecraft.

What can these AI agents do?

They form merchant hubs, vote in democracies, spread religions, and collect five times more distinct items than previous AI systems in Minecraft — All of this without human involvement.

How does it compare to other AI systems?

Altera's agents collected 32% of total distinct items, significantly outperforming previous systems like Voyager.

Why is this important?

It demonstrates AI's potential to organize and cooperate at unprecedented scales, potentially revolutionizing how we approach complex societal issues.

What's next?

Researchers are exploring the possibilities of scaling AI civilizations to billions or trillions of agents and addressing challenges in building truly conscious, caring AI.

This is Bill:

Bill is the business owner of a small business that generates ten million dollars in revenue. Bill had his cousin Chad do all the IT work in his office.

Sure, it's messy, but it gets the job done.

Until today…

Today, Bill is explaining to his staff that Chad forgot to back up their networks. There was also a hack last night where their client credit card information was leaked.

All of this could have been prevented if Bill chose Reppert Factor to outsource his IT department.

So tell us… who's your Chad?
