Yesterday, Sakana AI unveiled The AI Scientist. It performs scientific research, designs/runs its own experiments, and more.

What does it do?

It can independently perform every task in the scientific research process — from brainstorming to peer-review. This includes researching, coding, running experiments, and more.

Each paper only costs about $15 to produce.

Why do I care?

This could supercharge scientific progress. It could make the scientific research process faster and more affordable.

So it will replace scientists?

Not quite. The AI occasionally goes rogue, trying to extend its own runtime or getting stuck in infinite loops. It's impressive, but it still needs human oversight.

Is it actually useful?
