MAIN COURSE
This robot will steal your girlfriend 🦾 🤖
On Wednesday, Pudu Robotics introduced the Pudu D7. It's their first “semi-humanoid,” general-purpose intelligent robot.
What is the Pudu D7?
It’s a 5'5” tall, 99 lb robot with omnidirectional movement and bionic arms capable of complex tasks.
What can it do?
It can operate elevators, transport items, and sort objects. Its arms can lift 22 lb with 0.1 mm precision.
How long can it operate?
It has an 8+ hour battery life for continuous operation.
Any cool features?
It uses a multi-layered intelligence system for strategic planning and real-time actions, allowing it to learn and improve over time.
When will it be available?
Pudu aims for full commercialization in 2025.
Why do I care?
This represents a step towards flexible robotic solutions for various industries, from industrial to service-oriented.
What's Pudu's strategy?
They're developing specialized, semi-humanoid, and fully humanoid robots to cover a range of applications.
Any other humanoid robots?
Two weeks ago, Norwegian startup 1X unveiled NEO Beta. It’s a humanoid robot designed to assist in home environments.
Last month, Unitree Robotics launched its G1 humanoid robot for $16,000. The G1 stands just over 4 ft tall and weighs 77 lb.
A couple of weeks later, Google expanded its Gemma 2 family. It launched a small model, safety classifiers, and more.

SIDE SALAD
Anthropic’s chunky monkey 🙊 🍌
On Monday, Anthropic introduced a new retrieval mechanism called contextual retrieval. It aims to significantly improve the performance of RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) systems used with Claude 3.
What is contextual retrieval?
It's a method that embeds additional context into document chunks, which enhances the precision of retrieved data.
How does it improve on traditional RAG?
It uses an AI to add 50-100 tokens of context to each chunk, preserving meaning and improving accuracy.
What are the results?
It reduces the top 20 chunk retrieval failure rate by 35%, and up to 49% when combined with other techniques.
Who is it best for?
Large knowledge bases exceeding 200,000 tokens (about 500 pages).
Any implementation tips?
Key factors include chunking strategy, embedding model choice, and customizing the contextualizer prompt.
