MAIN COURSE

Perplexity lines its pocket 🤖 💵

Yesterday, Perplexity AI announced its incorporating ads to its platform. It plans to share the revenue with publishers whose content it uses.

What will it do?

Perplexity will show sponsored follow-up questions below search results. When a publisher's content answers these questions, they get a cut of the ad money.

Sweet gig.

They also get free access to Perplexity's Online LLM APIs for partners to create custom answer engines on their own sites. Also, free Enterprise Pro tier access for partner employees for a year.

Who's on board, so far?

Big names like Fortune, Time, and Der Spiegel. Perplexity aims to sign up 30 publishers by year-end.

What’s the point?

The timing's interesting. It follows recent plagiarism accusations and moves by competitors like OpenAI's SearchGPT and Microsoft's Bing update.

SIDE SALAD

Canva and Leonardo lock lips 👩‍❤️‍💋‍👨 ❤️

On Monday, Canva acquired Leonardo.ai, it’s an Australian startup specializing in generative AI for images and video.

Canva’s been busy.

It's Canva's eighth acquisition overall and second this year. They're clearly aiming to compete with Adobe.

What's Leonardo.ai bringing to the table?

Their Phoenix foundational model and a team of 120 researchers, engineers, and designers. These will be integrated into Canva's AI suite, Magic Studio.

Why do I care?

Expect more advanced AI features soon. Think hyperrealistic photo generation, character portraits, and AI-generated video.
