On Friday, Meta unveiled Spirit LM. It’s a new open-source AI model that can handle both text and speech with emotional expression.

What makes Spirit LM special?

Unlike robotic-sounding AI voices, it can express emotions like anger, surprise, and happiness through tone and pitch.

How does it work?

It uses tokens for phonetics, pitch, and tones, rather than traditional speech recognition and text-to-speech conversion.

What versions are available?

There are 2 models:

• Spirit LM Base: Uses phonetic tokens

• Spirit LM Expressive: Adds pitch and tone for emotional expression

How can I use it?

It's available under a noncommercial research license, with code and documentation included.

Yup. They're releasing model weights, code, and documentation to encourage further research.

On Thursday, Worldcoin, Sam Altman’s cryptocurrency, rebranded to “World.” It also unveiled a new version of its controversial Orb device.

What's new with the Orb?

It's 30% simpler to build, uses Nvidia's Jetson platform, and will be available to buy or rent.

Can I get an Orb delivered?

Seriously. They're launching Orb on Demand — like ordering a pizza but for eyeball scanning.

What's the point of all this?

To authenticate “unique humans” in the “age of AI” with a World ID and WLD cryptocurrency tokens.

How many people use it?

Nearly 7 million “unique humans” were verified, despite privacy concerns.

Is it available everywhere?

Nope. While expanding to new countries, it faces restrictions in Hong Kong, and has had investigations in Kenya. The crypto token isn't available in the US.

What's the goal?

They want “a thousand times more Orbs” than today, available in more places.
