Another OpenAI cofounder leaves 🏃‍♂️ 💨

Yesterday, John Schulman announced his departure from OpenAI. He's joining Anthropic to focus on AI alignment.

Why the switch?

Schulman claims he wants to dive deeper into AI alignment and get back to hands-on tech work. He claimed he’s not leaving due to a lack of support at OpenAI.

Any familiar faces at the new gig?

Yep. He'll be working with Jan Leike, another recent OpenAI-to-Anthropic transfer. Both seem concerned about balancing safety and business priorities.

What's Altman saying?

Sam Altman thanked Schulman, crediting him for a “significant fraction” of OpenAI's initial strategy. He also shared an anecdote about meeting Schulman.

What about Greg Brockman?

About that. He, the President of OpenAI, is taking an extended leave of absence to “relax and recharge.” He didn’t comment.

Elon sues OpenAI… Again 💁‍♂️ 💼

On Monday, Elon Musk filed a new lawsuit against OpenAI. This is separate from the lawsuit he dropped back in June.

What's the lawsuit?

Musk claims OpenAI betrayed its founding mission to develop AI that benefits humanity. He says Altman and Brockman tricked him into co-founding a “spurious non-profit venture.”

What’s new this time?

It now alleges federal racketeering law violations and targets OpenAI's deal with Microsoft. It claims Microsoft loses rights to OpenAI tech once AGI is achieved.

What about the old lawsuit?

It accused OpenAI of breaking its promise to Musk and other cofounders to keep their tech open source. Musk's lawyer says this one's “much more forceful.”
