On Monday, OpenAI released Sora. I took it for a test drive. Eh. Some aspects are good. Some are enraging. Here’s what the AI video generator can and can't do well.

What's good?

Eh. It makes decent abstract animations, it handles cartoons and stop-motion style well, it creates nice title animations with text, and water and fire looks pretty convincing.

What's broken?

For some infuriating reason, it won’t make videos from my dog’s picture. It thinks he’s a public figure. 🤷‍♂️

Also, objects disappear and glitch randomly, it can't handle basic physics, walking animations look creepy (legs switch positions), movement looks unnatural and “slow-motion,” and more.

Any safeguards?

It won't generate videos with copyrighted content, public figures, kids under 18, dangerous acts, and more.
