The British Journal of Educational Technology released a study on Metacognitive Laziness. It shows that ChatGPT helps grades but hurts deeper learning.

What's going on?

Students rely on AI instead of developing critical thinking skills. They get better grades as a result, but don’t think as deeply as students that don’t use AI.

The plus side?

Eh. It does boost short-term performance and helps with technical tasks.

What's the risk?

Students learn to skip planning and reflection. They just ask AI repeatedly instead of independently thinking.

It helps learning. Right?

Nah. Students couldn't apply knowledge to new situations, despite better grades.

What needs to be done?

We need to balance AI help with activities that force students to think deeply and reflect. Schools must redesign tasks to use AI as a tool while keeping students mentally engaged.

On Thursday, OpenAI unveiled Operator. It’s an AI that can browse the web, fill out forms, and place orders by controlling your computer.

How does it work?

It uses simple screenshots and mouse/keyboard inputs instead of APIs to perform tasks for you.

It works perfectly?

Nah. It delivers 58% success on simple web tasks and 38% on full computer use. It’s useless for things like calendar management, presentations, and more.

Who can try it?

If you have ChatGPT Pro, you can check it out here. OpenAI says it’s coming to Plus/Team/Enterprise plans later.

Is it safe?

You can opt out of data collection. It requires your approval for logins and payments.

Who's using it now?

Instacart, DoorDash, and OpenTable are partnering to test it out.
