AI uncovers America’s past🛢️🔥

America has a toxic time bomb ticking under our feet. And it’s worse than you think.

Scattered across the U.S., there are hundreds of thousands of abandoned oil wells. They're leaking toxic chemicals into the water and belching methane into the air.

This week, Berkeley Lab rolled out the U-Net model to tackle the problem. It scans 45 years’ worth of dusty maps and marks where oil companies once drilled.

Once flagged, researchers confirm locations with drones, sensors, and on-the-ground inspections.

The results?

The AI found 1,301 potential wells in California and Oklahoma alone. Some confirmed to be leaking toxic chemicals.

Why do I care? 

Experts estimate 310,000 to 800,000 undocumented wells could exist nationwide. These wells leak into groundwater, destroy ecosystems, and release methane. The price to fix each well? $76k. The total cleanup cost? $60 billion.

How are they going to fix this?

Simple. Plug the wells with cement. But finding them is half the battle, and this is where AI shines.
