MAIN COURSE

DeepMind exposed everything ๐Ÿ“š ๐Ÿงฌ

On Monday, Google DeepMind released AlphaFold 3's code and model weights for academic use. They did this a few weeks after its creators won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

What's special about AlphaFold 3?

It models how proteins interact with other molecules, which is crucial for understanding drug behavior at the molecular level.

Who can use it?

Only academic researchers can, with strict rules against commercial use or training similar models.

Why open-source it?

DeepMind faced criticism for keeping it locked behind a server, which scientists said slowed drug discovery research.

Isnโ€™t this risky?

Maybe. Chinese companies like Baidu and ByteDance already have similar models, sharing the code could help competitors advance faster.

Why do I care?

It balances scientific collaboration with commercial interests in the US-China AI race.

What are people saying about it?

Critics called it a win for academic freedom, while others worry about protecting US tech advantages.

I want to learn more about AlphaFold.

I got you. Last year, we covered AlphaFold 2โ€™s updates. When first introduced in 2020, it modeled individual proteins. Last November, it modeled complex groups of molecules.

Back in May, we reported on AlphaFold 3โ€™s release. It advanced the field of protein folding and drug discovery.

In September, we covered AlphaProteo. It's an AI system that designs custom proteins to stick to specific molecular targets.

FetchFox is a new way to do scraping. You can scrape any website with just plain English, no coding or complicated UI.

Tell FetchFox what you want to scrape:

โ€œGet the usernames of all the replies to this twitter post, and then go to their profiles and find their number of followers.โ€

With this command, FetchFox will scrape it for you.

Anyone can use the Chrome extension, and if you're a developer, there's also a free open source library that you can use in your own apps.

SIDE SALAD

100+ reasons you have no style ๐ŸŽจ ๐Ÿ“ง

On Thursday, Microsoft added AI theme generation to Outlook. It allows you to personalize your email experience.

What can you customize?

You can pick from 100+ locations or use your current one, choose artistic styles (realistic, oil painting, cartoon), and set auto-update frequencies.

Will themes repeat?

Nope. The AI generates unique visuals each time.

When can I try it?

It's rolling out now across all platforms - iOS, Android, Windows, Mac, and web.

Why do I care?

Microsoft believes personalized workspaces boost productivity and engagement.

What's the bigger picture?

It's part of Microsoft's push to weave AI throughout its products, focusing on personalization.
