Last week, Google DeepMind and Apptronik announced a partnership. The goal is to make smarter humanoid robots that can work in the real world.

Who's Apptronik?

They make Apollo, a 5'8" humanoid robot that’s working with Mercedes-Benz. They've built 15 different robots, including one for NASA.

What's the plan?

The goal is to combine Google's Gemini AI with Apollo to make robots that can handle complex tasks and adapt to changing situations.

Is it working?

Early demos show Apollo using Gemini to play Jenga. Mercedes-Benz is also testing it for delivering parts and inspections.

What's different about Apollo?

It's designed to work safely alongside humans in places like warehouses without requiring major facility changes.

OpenAI partnered with Figure earlier this year for their second-gen humanoid robot.

Like OpenAI’s o1 model, it pauses while thinking to show you its reasoning process before giving answers.

Go to Google AI Studio and pick Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking Experimental from settings, or access it through the Gemini API.

How much can it handle?

It tackles text and image inputs up to 32K tokens, but only outputs text. No built-in search or code running yet.
