Is Alexa less useless now?🔊
On Wednesday, Amazon unveiled Alexa+. The goal is to turn its voice assistant into an independent helper that remembers you and acts on your behalf.
What can it do?
Alexa+ remembers your preferences, completes multistep tasks across services, and navigates websites to book restaurants or order groceries.
What's improved?
It's more conversational and can maintain context across conversations. You can also upload documents, emails, and photos for Alexa to use later.
What makes it different?
Amazon claims Alexa+ is proactive. It suggests you leave early for traffic, notifies you when concert tickets go on sale, and more. On Echo Show devices, it can analyze images.
What does it cost?
If you have Amazon Prime, it’s free. It costs 19.99 bucks a month for everyone else.
Does it work with any Alexa?
It’s initially available in the US on the Echo Show 8, 10, 15, and 21. Compatibility for other devices is coming later.
Why now?
Amazon is playing catch-up after falling behind ChatGPT and Google Gemini, leveraging its massive installed base of Echo devices.

How is it different?
Mercury uses diffusion instead of traditional token-by-token generation. It works similarly to AI image/video generators.

It’s up to 10 times faster than regular LLMs. It produces over 1,000 tokens per second on NVIDIA H100 GPUs without specialized hardware.
How good is it?
Early tests show it matches GPT-4o Mini and Claude 3.5 Haiku in quality while running much faster and cheaper.
