Shopify's new AI assistant 🦾

Shopify’s CEO announced Sidekick. What it do? It’s a chatbot assistant built into the Shopify store dashboard.

Sidekick will start its Beta “soon.“

The anticipation.

The preview with CEO Tobi Lutke focuses on high-level details, but there are some sneak peaks.

Sidekick will likely automate tasks that previously required dedicated time and expertise, such as web design, generating sales reports, ad copy, and more.

That, and complete tasks that require lots of clicking as part of managing a Shopify store, like managing collections and applying discounts across your whole offering.

Sidekick, make me filthy rich.

Our take: With Framer’s AI-powered e-commerce platform becoming more popular, Shopify needed to respond somehow. And features like designing your e-commerce site via text prompt could be a huge disruptor. Will it replace web designers? No way. But will it increase efficiency for Shopify store owners? Absolutely.

Shopify’s mission is to make entrepreneurship easier — and it’s certainly looking like it’ll get that way. As AI penetrates the tools we use every day, we’re going to see a huge force multiplier. It’ll allow individuals to get a lot more done and start their own businesses — expect a new wave.

Musk with a new AI venture 🚀

Elon Musk announced xAI.

Man, this guy really likes the letter X.

The goal: according to the company’s motto, it’s to… “understand the universe.“

Easy peezy.

The team is stacked with AI engineers previously at OpenAI, Tesla, DeepMind, Microsoft Research, Google Research, and more.

An AI supergroup, if you will.

Musk has claimed that he’s “the reason OpenAI exists,“ and that he stopped backing them while calling for tighter AI regulations.

Dan Hendrycks, who serves as the director for the Center for AI Safety, also directly advises xAI.

 A Twitter Spaces meet-and-greet with the team is taking place shortly.

Our take: Good to see some intentionality with putting safety guardrails in place, at least in theory.

But why so secretive? There’s no info on funding, clarity on the company’s intentions, or what kind of AI it will create. We’ll be keeping a close eye on this. But it’s Elon’s Musk, so it will at least be entertaining.
