MAIN COURSE

Disney makes robots dance better  🦾 🤖

Yesterday, Disney researchers unveiled VMP. It’s a new way to make robots move more naturally.

What's the big deal?

VMP (Versatile Motion Priors) lets AI control characters or robots using full-body motion references. It's like teaching a robot to dance by showing it videos.

How does it work?

It's a two-step process:

  • AI learns to compress motion data into a compact form

  • Another AI learns to map this compressed data to robot-friendly commands

Why should you care?

This could lead to more fluid, human-like movements in everything from video game characters to real-world robots.

Did they test it?

You bet. They tried it in simulations and even got a two-legged robot busting moves in the real world.

SIDE SALAD

Fine-tune GPT-4o 🤖 📐

Yesterday, OpenAI launched fine-tuning for GPT-4o. It gives you the keys to customize their own AI powerhouse.

What's the big deal?

You can now train GPT-4o on custom datasets, boosting performance for specific tasks. It's like giving the AI cram sessions for your particular field.

Who's it for?

You can jump in with a paid plan. OpenAI is offering 1M free training tokens daily through September 23.

Show me the money:

  • Training: $25 per million tokens

  • Use: $3.75 per million input tokens, $15 per million output tokens

Who's winning?

Cosine's Genie crushed coding benchmarks. It’s a fine-tuned GPT-4o model. Another fine-tuned model, Distyl, also topped the BIRD-SQL leaderboard.

SWEET DESSERT

SearchGPT vs. Perplexity 🤖 🥊

Yesterday, I went live and put SearchGPT and Perplexity AI through their paces. I compared how both tackled the internet's most asked questions about AI.

What's the big idea?

I fired off a series of AI-related questions to both tools, comparing their answers on everything from deep learning to customer service.

Who came out on top?

It's complicated. SearchGPT often gave broader, more accessible answers, while Perplexity dove deeper into technical details.

Any surprises?

Perplexity has a weird obsession with calling AI models "black boxes." Also, both tools sometimes struggled with up-to-date info.

Why do I care?

This showdown reveals the strengths and quirks of different AI search tools. Knowing which to use could save you time and give you better answers.

Cool Tool ⚒️

This is Bill:

Bill is the business owner of a small business that generates ten million dollars in revenue. Bill had his cousin Chad do all the IT work in his office.

Sure, it's messy, but it gets the job done.

Until today…

Today, Bill is explaining to his staff that Chad forgot to back up their networks. There was also a hack last night where their client credit card information was leaked.

All of this could have been prevented if Bill chose Reppert Factor to outsource his IT department.

So tell us… who's your Chad?

Startup News 💰

ElevenLabs' Reader app is now worldwide. It converts text into speech and now supports 32 languages.

Perplexity's code interpreter is gradually being rolled out. It offers more use cases than GPT’s interpreter, and it allows you to create visualizations.

Research 👨‍🔬

TableBench — a newly developed benchmark designed to test large language models (LLMs) in handling real-world tabular data complexities.

Automated Design of Agentic Systems — a research area focused on using AI to automatically create and improve complex agent systems.
