ChatGPT's App Update

PLUS: Meta's AI Music Generator

Good morning, human brains. Welcome back to your daily munch of AI news.

Here’s what’s on the menu today:

  • Meta unveils MusicGen 🎹

A new music generation model that combines text and audio prompting.

  • ChatGPT’s app update

iPad OS, Siri / Shortcuts integration, drag-and-drop, and more.

  • OpenAI competitor receives $270M

Cohere AI raises a series C from Nvidia, Oracle, Salesforce, and others.

APPETIZER

Meta Launches MusicGen 🎹

Intergalactic, planetary, another dimension…

MusicGen generates short snippets of music by combining text and audio inputs  the text determines the style, while the audio file sets the melody.

The big deal?

MusicGen generates pretty decent outputs in a single pass, instead of the typical multiple required.

Here’s a comparison of the outputs of MusicGen and its current competitors.

It’s open-source, commercially friendly, and demo-ready on Hugging Face.

Our thoughts: It’s cool to see even more improvement on the AI-generated music front… now, this stuff is actually listenable. The next door to unlock might be the output length — it’s limited to 30 seconds at the moment. Imagine being able to one-shot a whole three and a half minute song…

BUZZWORD OF THE DAY

AI Automation

AI Automation refers to leveraging AI to accomplish tasks on our behalf.

A common example is email filtering, where AI intelligently sorts incoming messages into categories like primary, social, or spam.

MAIN COURSE

ChatGPT’s new update 📱

OpenAI's ChatGPT app released an update which makes it slick to use on the iPad.

So, what’s in there?

For starters, it includes full-screen and split-screen functionality. You can have ChatGPT on one side of the screen, while you drag-and-drops outputs into apps on the other side.

The update also adds Siri and Shortcuts Integration.

“Hey Siri, open ChatGPT.”

Besides this obvious example, users also gain the ability to automate ChatGPT’s outputs through Shortcuts. That means ChatGPT can automatically share the generated responses to other apps (like Notes or Docs) once programmed to do so.

“Email Barbara that I’m not working today — professionally.“

If you’d like to download the app, you can click here.

Our take: The update feels like a boost in bandwidth — a faster/more accessible way to use ChatGPT. Another infrastructure step, if you will, to get us to ready for more automations with AI. Could the iPad become the new meta for AI-augmented work?

A LITTLE SOMETHING EXTRA

OpenAI competitor receives $270M

Cohere raised $270 million in funding from investors including Nvidia, Oracle, and Salesforce.

Cohere's valuation sits at ~$2.2 billion after this series C round, while there were originally rumors of a potential $6B valuation earlier in the year.

The Toronto-based startup says they aim to provide neutral, adaptable AI solutions for businesses. They’re focused on building AI models for enterprise customers.

Where’s the cash going?

Computing resources and expanding Cohere's team.

More GPUs, please.

Our take: It doesn’t look like there’s any slowdown in sight for AI funding, but it’s encouraging to see a more down-to-earth valuation.
