MAIN COURSE
Teen dead. AI claims immunity😳
On Wednesday, Character.AI claimed 1st Amendment protection. It did this after being sued over a 14-year-old's suicide following use of its AI chatbot.
What happened?
A teen committed suicide after months talking to an AI character named Dany. The mother sued Character.AI in October.
What's the defense?
Character.AI says that AI chat deserves the same free speech protection as video games and social media.
What does the mom say?
She seeks limits on AI's ability to tell stories and express emotions.
Doesn’t AI have safeguards?
Yes. The company claims it has age limits, content monitoring, and warnings that characters aren't real.
What's next?
The Florida court decision is pending. Google and Alphabet are also named in the lawsuit. This could set major legal precedent for AI speech rights and company liability.
