MAIN COURSE

27 billion says you can't code 💻

On Wednesday, Anysphere acquired Supermaven. It’s an AI coding assistant startup, to boost its popular Cursor code editor.

What's being acquired?

Supermaven brings fast, context-aware code completion and its Babble AI model, which excels at understanding long code sequences.

What happens to its existing tools?

Supermaven's plugins for VS Code, JetBrains, and Neovim will stay available, but its focus shifts to Cursor.

Who's behind Supermaven?

Jacob Jackson, Tabnine's co-creator, launched it in February 2024, attracting 35,000 developers.

Why do I care?

The AI coding tool market could hit $27.17B by 2032, and this merger strengthens Cursor against rivals like GitHub Copilot.

What's next?

Anysphere plans to launch a new version of its Tab AI model for streamlining complex coding tasks.

What are they saying?

“We can build a more useful product, faster, together,” says Anysphere CEO Michael Truell.

What other coding tools are out there?

Last month, we reported on GitHub Spark. It allows you to create apps, watch it build in real-time, and make changes via text prompts without any coding.

A couple of days before, we covered Anthropic’s Analysis Tool. It acts as a code sandbox within Claude that can analyze customer data, sales figures, or server logs, and more.

FetchFox is a new way to do scraping. You can scrape any website with just plain English, no coding or complicated UI.

Tell FetchFox what you want to scrape:

“Get the usernames of all the replies to this twitter post, and then go to their profiles and find their number of followers.”

With this command, FetchFox will scrape it for you.

Anyone can use the Chrome extension, and if you're a developer, there's also a free open source library that you can use in your own apps.

SIDE SALAD

AI sells your soul for 9 billion 💰 🔍

On Wednesday, Perplexity announced it is adding ads to its AI search engine. For now, it’s starting with U.S. users.

Ads, you say?

Indeed. Now “sponsored follow-up questions” will appear alongside search results, with brands like Indeed and Whole Foods already signed up.

How do these ads work?

They blend in as natural follow-ups (like “How can I use LinkedIn for job search?”) with AI-generated answers. There’s allegedly no advertiser editing allowed.

So they’ll harvest our data?

Perplexity promises no user data sharing and says ads won't impact search objectivity.

Why now?

With 100 million weekly searches and a potential $9B valuation, they need more revenue beyond $20/month Pro subscriptions.

Why do I care?

While OpenAI avoids ads and Google moves cautiously, Perplexity sees them as key to scaling and supporting publishers. They're treating it as an experiment and asking for your feedback, while promising to maintain search quality.
