APPETIZER
Andreessen’s AI Optimism 🚀
World-famous entrepreneur and investor Marc Andreessen published a buzzy article on a16z, titled “Why AI Will Save The World.”
It’s got the people talking.
The timing seems intentional. World leaders, tech giants, and AI developers are all warning against AI’s potential threat to humanity.
His article went live shortly after the Center for AI Safety’s Statement on AI Risk gained massive public attention. The statement has been backed by more than 350 tech and political figures, including Musk, Altman, and Geoffrey Hinton (the Godfather of AI).
But Andreessen calls recent AI hysteria the result of a “moral panic”, and offers counterpoints to the biggest doomer arguments.

“In short, AI doesn’t want, it doesn’t have goals, it doesn’t want to kill you, because it’s not alive. And AI is a machine – is not going to come alive any more than your toaster will.”
Key Takeaways:
1/ Andreessen believes AI will transform society and enhance fields like healthcare and education by automating tasks and personalizing services.
2/ He dismisses AI as a catastrophic economic risk, suggesting new technologies typically lead to net job creation.
3/ He encourages unrestricted competition in AI development.
4/ He proposes government-private partnerships to prevent AI misuse and ensure global AI dominance for the West.
Take: Andreessen's optimism is a breath of fresh air amidst AI doom scenarios.
Counter-take: While Andreessen's optimism is laudable, it's essential to maintain a balanced perspective. Unrestricted development and deployment of AI, regardless of the entity doing it, could still lead to undesirable consequences. AI needs careful oversight and ethics guidelines to stay in check as its development accelerates.
BUZZWORD OF THE DAY
Training Data
Also known as a training set, training dataset, or learning set.
The essential “food“ for machine learning models, training data is the original source material machine learning & AI models learn from.
They typically need to be quite large in order to yield consistent and accurate results.

MAIN COURSE
Japan: copyright need not apply for AI 🇯🇵
Japanese lawmakers affirmed that copyrights will not be enforced for AI training data, irrespective of the data's source, usage, or nature.
This policy gives Japan more leverage in their overarching strategy to become a global leader in AI. It could also help address domestic issues, such as a rapidly aging population.
The new ruling allows Japanese AI companies to use Western intellectual property without restriction.
What’s the West gonna do about it?
An argument: if Western AI companies haven’t yet disclosed copyrighted source material they’ve used as part of training data, Japan’s approach is to make it a non-issue. They’ve essentially played the “get real” card — the question isn’t if Japanese copyright has been infringed on, but rather to what degree.
Oh, snap.

Two camps have emerged in Japan:
Artists who fear the word will devalue due to AI
Academia and business pushing for global AI dominance
Japan's new stance is a plot twist in AI regulation and intellectual property debate surrounding it. It’s a rare case of a developed nation willing to disregard global norms to secure a competitive advantage.
Our take: By sidestepping copyright norms, Japan hopes to expedite its AI progress and compete directly with the West. This move, while controversial, might force a global reevaluation of AI regulation and intellectual property law as a whole.
A LITTLE SOMETHING EXTRA
Global AI Safety Summit 🌎
The UK government has announced that it will be hosting the first global summit on artificial intelligence (AI) safety. A date has not yet been set.
This summit aims to provide a dedicated platform for international discussion of AI, its risks, and how to mitigate them.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and U.S. President Joe Biden are set to discuss AI technology in a separate upcoming meeting today.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and President Joe Biden meeting
In related news, U.S. tech company Palantir Technologies plans to make the UK its new European headquarters for AI development.
All these latest developments are signs of more international collaboration in AI.
Our take: The upcoming summit is a step in bringing together global leaders to create a safer future for AI. But, how exactly will these discussions translate into actionable policy, and then keep up with the fluid AI landscape?
