Adobe's AI Overhaul

PLUS: Bing's Chat Updates

Good morning, human brains. Welcome back to your daily munch of AI news.

Here’s what’s on the menu today:

  • The Unabomber on AI 💣

His dystopian views on AI written back in 2008 have people talking.

  • Adobe’s AI overhaul 🎨

Adobe integrated its Firefly art generator into its graphic design app, Express.

  • Bing’s Chat updates 🗣️🖥️

Several updates for its intelligent chat box, including voice chat on Desktop.

APPETIZER

Yep, the Unabomber was a doomer 💣️

His writing on intelligent machines has regained attention, with the optimism-pessimism AI debate in full swing. In stark contrast with the optimistic outlooks of those like Marc Andreessen, this feels a lot closer to Eliezer Yudkowsky’s point of view.

A blast from the past, one might say…

Kaczynski painted AI as a tool capable of making human labor obsolete, potentially leading to societal collapse.

Ted: Kaczynski's bleak outlook is no shocker. Pieces of what he predicted ring true, though, in terms of increased automation and specialization.

Counter-Ted: Cautionary tales are important, but it's also vital to remember that new tech creates societal and economic shifts, birthing new industries and opportunities. And we’ve seen this phenomenon play out even before AI — so all of this should be taken with a grain of salt.

BUZZWORD OF THE DAY

Creative Destruction

A term popularized by the Austrian-American economist Joseph Schumpeter, creative destruction refers to the process by which economic structures are disrupted and replaced by new ones.

We’ve seen creative destruction at an accelerated pace since the Industrial Revolution, e.g. steam replacing wind-powered sails and the horse and buggy being replaced by the automobile.

We’ll continue to see this macro-economic idea played out with AI as the economy adapts to the new tech.

MAIN COURSE

Adobe’s AI revamp

Adobe added its text-to-image AI model, Firefly, to its graphic design app, Express.

The Firefly integration breathes new life into Adobe Express with AI features including:

1/ Images and text effects generated from a text prompt

2/ Video editing and mixed-media creation

3/ Photoshop compatibility

4/ Multi-player creation

The notable feature: text effects. We’re seeing AI prompting for adjusting individual design elements now.

Our take: It seems that AI is a part of staple in creative work at this point — expect the trend to continue. The fusion of AI and creativity is no longer a distant dream but a present reality.

A LITTLE SOMETHING EXTRA

New Bing updates 🗣️🖥️

Microsoft released several updates for its Bing Chat interface, including voice functionality on Desktop.

Now, users can access Bing's voice input for chat by clicking the microphone icon in the Bing Chatbox in the lower-right corner.

Other updates include enhanced visuals, citations, graphic-centric answers, more image creation, chat history export, third-party plugins, and multi-modality. Bing Chat cites its answers with links, and it’s powered by a version of OpenAI’s LLM, called Prometheus.

Our take: Bing's voice chat for desktop is a step towards bringing an intuitive and engaging AI chat experience to a wider audience. The trends we’re seeing indicate that we’re in the integration phase now — embedding AI support into software, and making its outputs faster to use for everyday tasks.
