MAIN COURSE

Guy solves illness with AI🏥

On Thursday, a developer shared an open-source AI tool that helped diagnose his autoimmune disease. This was after 5 years and $100K in failed hospital visits.

What is it?

It’s a tool that analyzes medical records, lab results, and symptoms using AI to find patterns doctors might miss.

How does it work?

  • Uploads and standardizes medical records

  • Converts lab results to common formats

  • Shows changes over time

  • Works with local or cloud AI models

Why bother?

Renaud Lifchitz was frustrated by fragmented healthcare. He claims that each specialist only saw part of the problem until one finally connected the dots.

Who can use it?

It’s free for anyone. It can run locally for privacy or use commercial AI with API keys.

What's next?

He’s working to make it fully local to protect medical data. He plans to add direct hospital record imports in the future.

SIDE SALAD

Why Alexa’s so dumb🤖

Amazon blew its chance to dominate AI despite having 500 million Alexa devices. This is based on interviews with a dozen former employees.

What happened?

Amazon showed off its chatty new Alexa in September 2023, then radio silence. It still hasn't launched, despite multiple promises.

Why the failure?

  • Too little data and wrong chips

  • Internal politics and bureaucracy

  • Teams fighting over features

  • Leaders with no AI experience setting impossible deadlines

What went wrong?

It was caught sleeping by ChatGPT. Amazon scrambled to catch up, but couldn't get teams to work together or solve basic technical problems.

How bad is it?

Its claims of a 2 trillion parameter Olympus model were “a joke.” The real model had only 470 billion parameters. The current Alexa is still using the same 100B model from the original demo.

Why do I care?

It shows how hard it is for old tech to compete with new AI companies that don't have legacy systems holding them back.

What's next?

Former employees doubt Alexa will ever catch up to OpenAI and Google. It could become a “digital relic,” despite it having the potential to lead innovation.
